UPDATE: Check with your local government council as to what permits you may need to cross state borders during ongoing border restrictions.
Are Removalists Essential Services?
The simple answer is yes. While there have been recent improvements to border controls, under freight & logistics definitions by each state government, removalists are considered an ‘Essential Service’ and are able to transport your house contents both local and interstate. They are also exempted from border closures and quarantine conditions, so if you’re travelling interstate, you may use a removalist. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the number of people planning to travel interstate has fallen dramatically, by up to 70 percent. But remember to thoroughly research what declarations you may need with your state border pass.
Overall, it’s a life-changing experience to move to Brisbane or any new city, so it’s vital to do your homework to have as many questions answered, as this will ensure that you settle in and have a minimum of surprises at your new home. There are things you can do to make your step even better, following all the latest government advice.
For many people, these are stressful times, but at the same time, we see many optimistic indicators about the number of people travelling, saving, and looking to the future for new and creative ways to keep the economy moving.
Removalists are currently able to transport their products either locally or interstate in Australia as an important logistics service. Please check the latest info & links in the state by state breakdown below if you are moving interstate. We actively advocate healthy moving activities and social distancing where possible. We also suggest that you let the Removalist know in advance whether you have, are displaying signs of, or have been in touch with someone with COVID-19 so that they can better reliably endorse your move after any necessary quarantine steps.
Border Restrictions & Lockdowns
Can I move house interstate during Covid-19? Yes you can, with proof of residency, approved exemption and approved border passes at present. Many State Governments have eased up border restrictions between other states which is great for most of us. This doesn’t mean you will not a border pass if you plan on moving interstate, even just passing through, always check what passes and declarations you may need.
Can I still hire a van or a truck and transport myself?
Yes you can. Across Australia, car rental companies are still available. But several branches are closed temporarily, so make sure that you search the website of the organisation to find the nearest one.
If you are trying to get a friend to help you travel, remember to adhere to the current guidelines and two-person rule of national social distance, which may be enforced slightly differently for each state and territory.
Will I need to self-isolate after moving house?
For a local switch, no. Interstate, you may be forced to self-isolate in certain states once you move into your new home. Depending on where you are going to, there are different rules. For instance, Border Control would require you to self-isolate for 14 days if you travel to South Australia, which is effective immediately upon entry. You can transfer your products under the exemption list, however, and for the two-week duration, removalists do not need to self-isolate. If you’re concerned about your particular travel and moving needs, the best thing to do is get in contact. Based on where you are heading to, we will be able to provide you with official government advice and we will also be able to clarify precisely how we will support you and how this transition will be handled.
Tips on Keeping Safe While Moving House During Covid-19
Washing of hands and the use of hand sanitiser.
After each move there is robust cleaning techniques for our vehicles. In particular, we are cleaning common contact areas such as steering wheels, door handles, seats and other hard or metal surfaces. Soap, chlorine, hand sanitisers, such sprays of alcohol are very disruptive to the virus.
Cash is well known to harbour many bacteria’s and viruses. Keep any cash transfers in a sealed envelope to help avoid your hands touching the cash. Clean hands after handing the money.
Daily health check-ins for workers. To ensure that someone who is sick stays home, for all employees.
Pre-arrival call for pick up venue, to make sure no-one is sick at your place. We’ll need to reschedule your transfer if anyone’s sick. If someone is sick, please also call and let us know, as this will save all of us time and money. At a later date, we can easily move you once you are well again.
Remember to keep up as much as possible your regular routines throughout the move:
Wash your hands regularly for at least 20 seconds with soap and water, particularly after being in a public place, or after coughing or sneezing. If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer of at least 60 percent alcohol.
Stop touching unwashed hands with your eyes, nose and mouth.
If you have to go out in public, avoid physical interaction with others who are ill, and practice social distancing by standing at least 6 feet away from others when possible.
To cover your mouth and nose when around others and when you do go out in public, wear a cloth face covering. In the event you are sick, the fabric face mask is intended to protect other people. If you have trouble breathing, or are unconscious, incapacitated or otherwise unable to remove the mask without help, do not put one on young children under the age of 2.
When coughing or sneezing, cover the nose and mouth with a tissue and throw the tissue away after using it. Cough or sneeze into your elbow or sleeve, not your hands, if a tissue isn’t available.
Clean and disinfect surfaces that are regularly touched every day. Tables, doorknobs, light switches, handles, chairs, laptops, telephones, keyboards, sinks, toilets, faucets and countertops are all included.
Concentrating on the good points of moving is the best way to defeat any concern you might have moving house during the pandemic, and the first thing that comes to mind is the thrill and adventure of a new place or culture. Fresh possibilities, obstacles, adventures, mates, history, views, all of life’s richness. If you use the stress to sharpen your concentration so that you become a warrior of transformation, the stress factor is not inherently negative.
